What we know

The community’s first project

By the House’s own account, Hungarians in the tobacco district began organizing a hall in January 1947, led by Paul Rapai, and formally founded the Tobacco District Hungarian House that February. It was dedicated on 15 May 1949, the community’s first completed project.S8

It became the community’s gathering place: national celebrations, formal balls and shows, dancing classes, chess tournaments, and from 1970 the Katalin Ball, where debutantes made their debut.S8 Its history names the House a major organizer of the Delhi Harvest Festival, dating that role to 1971.S8

The hall still hosts events and rentals, and keeps its own history on its website. More of the community’s story is on the Hungarian community page.
