PrivacyWhat we collect, and why

Plain language, no fine print Privacy notice

This site collects very little. Here is exactly what, why, and what you can ask us to do with it.

The short version

What we collect

Reading this site collects nothing about you. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. The fonts are served from this site. Two things load from elsewhere only if you choose: the National Film Board film on the homepage comes from nfb.ca when you press play, and a few pages can show someone else’s Facebook post when you press “Show the post here”. Facebook may then set its own cookies; until you press it, nothing from Facebook loads.

The only personal information we receive is what you choose to send through the Share your story form:

  • your name and email address;
  • your connection to the story and a decade, if you pick them;
  • your message, and any photos or PDFs you attach;
  • how you’d like to be credited, and whether you give permission to publish.

To stop spam, the form also uses your internet address, scrambled, to count how many times it has been sent in the last hour. That count is discarded after an hour and is not stored with your submission.

How we use it

Why we keep it

We use what you send to read it, check it, and reply to you by email. Your email address is never published. Nothing you send is published unless you tick the box giving permission, and then only with the credit you asked for. Photos of private farms are never published with an address.

Submissions are stored privately on the website’s server, where only the site’s editor can see them, and a copy is emailed to the editor. Files you upload are kept in a locked folder on the server that only the site’s editor, logged in, can open; they are not linked anywhere public. If you gave permission and we use a photo, we publish a copy of that one photo with the credit you asked for. We do not sell, rent or share what you send with anyone else.

Your choices

What you can ask us

You can ask to see what you sent, to correct it, to take back permission to publish, or to have it deleted. Use the Share form, choose “A correction”, and tell us what you’d like done; we’ll confirm by email. We keep submissions only as long as they’re useful to this history project.

Canadian privacy law gives you the right to access and correct personal information an organization holds about you. If you have a concern we haven’t resolved, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada can help.
