From farm work to a community
According to the Lithuanian Canadian Community’s history, Lithuanians were working Delhi-area tobacco farms in 1930 and 1931. By 1932 some were growing tobacco of their own, and in 1938 others bought tobacco farms. At the start of the Second World War about a hundred Lithuanian families and individuals lived around Delhi, most of them farming.S29
After the war the community organized. The same history records an organizing committee formed in Delhi on 27 May 1950, a folk-dance group in 1958, about 200 members in the Delhi chapter by 1960, and a library opened in 1961.S29
The numbers held for decades. About 200 people of Lithuanian descent lived in the area in the early 1980s, and in 1996 the Delhi–Tillsonburg chapter of the Lithuanian Canadian Community still had 95 members.S29 In Delhi, St. Casimir Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church carries the community’s name.
