The station’s first chief

G. Lloyd Haslam was the first officer in charge of the federal tobacco substation set up west of Delhi in 1933, answering to the superintendent of the Harrow research station.S1 His brother, Bob Haslam of the Harrow station, was also involved in the early work.S1

Under him the substation began with fertilizer experiments and variety trials on 6 hectares, put up its pack barn, kilns and greenhouse, and held its first field day in August 1934, when 400 visitors came.S1 By the war years, Ford Stinson was in charge.S1
